Paper trailblazers in the car industry

In the early 90s, Honicel collaborated with a supplier for Ferrari to make them a panel out of paper honeycomb. As you might expect from this iconic race car brand, their requirements were that the panel should be both super-strong and ultra-lightweight.

Honeycomb cardboard turned out to be superior to the materials that were used at the time. This success marked a new era of applications for paper honeycomb in the automotive industry. Today, all the big car manufacturers use it, mostly in car trunk plates, while tests are pending to expand its application to other car parts.
